ABB supplies hoist solution to Karowe diamond mine expansion in Botswana

The Karowe diamond mine expansion project in Botswana represents a remarkable advancement in mining operations, showcasing a unique hoisting solution tailored to extend the mine’s lifespan. Owned by Lucara Diamond Corporation, a member of the Lundin Group of Companies, through its subsidiary Lucara Botswana (Pty) Ltd, the Karowe mine has been operational since 2012. Renowned for producing large, high-quality, Type IIA diamonds exceeding 10.8 carats, the mine’s expansion aims to prolong its life by more than 12 years, extending operations to at least 2040.

To achieve this, the expansion involves sinking two shafts: a ventilation shaft and a production shaft. The production shaft will house a hoisting system, including a primary production hoist supported by a service hoist. ABB’s expert hoisting team collaborated with engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors from Canada and South Africa to deliver innovative solutions tailored to the project’s requirements.

“Throughout the project life cycle, we have supported the team to identify the best solution,” explains Danielle Koekemoer, Local Sales Manager, Hoisting at ABB Process Industries. “As a leader and expert in the industry, we are committed to helping partners achieve their ambitions efficiently and effectively.”

In the initial phase, ABB’s team determined the optimal use and refurbishment of the existing fleet of hoists to meet the project’s needs. This refurbishment included two kibble hoists, two sets of stage hoists, and various auxiliary equipment. All four refurbished hoists were sourced from the UMS Group’s existing inventory and upgraded under ABB’s guidance by local subcontractors. These hoists are currently being used to sink the shafts, with the kibble hoist designated to serve as the permanent production hoist once shaft sinking is complete.

Following the successful completion of the refurbishment phase, ABB secured a second contract valued at over ZAR130 million to supply a new auxiliary hoist and a service hoist. These new hoists will facilitate the transportation of personnel and materials to the underground works. The UMS Group, under ABB’s direction, is responsible for installing these state-of-the-art systems.

“Our collaboration with customers begins before they have even procured the equipment to ensure the final solution is right for their needs and cost-effective,” notes Mike Davis, Global Product Manager, Hoisting at ABB Process Industries.

The innovative hoisting solution, combined with ABB’s expertise and collaboration with global partners, ensures the Karowe diamond mine remains a leading producer of high-quality diamonds while maximizing operational efficiency and sustainability.
