At the 2025 Dubai Airshow, Emirates SkyCargo and Abu Dhabi–based LODD Autonomous signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore next-generation air cargo technologies, marking a significant step toward integrating autonomous VTOL aircraft into commercial logistics.
The MoU was formalised by Badr Abbas, Divisional Senior Vice President at Emirates SkyCargo, and Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous.
Under the agreement, the companies will assess the deployment of VTOL aircraft across Emirates SkyCargo’s global network. The collaboration includes feasibility assessments, regulatory engagement, and live demonstrations. Drawing on more than 40 years of logistics expertise, Emirates SkyCargo will contribute operational insight to LODD’s experimental programme through 2027, helping refine aircraft design and development for future commercial use.
The announcement follows LODD’s first successful test flight of Hili, a fully autonomous hybrid heavy-lift cargo aircraft capable of transporting up to 250 kg over 700 km. Emirates SkyCargo is now evaluating the aircraft for potential integration into its ground operations to enhance efficiency across its dual-airport hub.
“This partnership with LODD reflects our commitment to introducing innovative products that address our customers’ logistics challenges,” said Abbas. “Emerging technologies will underpin the next era of air cargo, and Emirates SkyCargo intends to lead this transformation by shaping solutions that deliver real, measurable impact. We are pleased to explore the potential of this UAE-developed technology.”
Rashid Mattar Al Manai added, “The UAE’s vision is built on harnessing innovation to improve everyday life. Our work with Emirates SkyCargo combines LODD’s advanced autonomous technology with the nation’s longstanding focus on safe, scalable, and sustainable logistics. Together, we will accelerate the adoption of drone-powered cargo solutions that extend reach, reduce delivery times, and reinforce the UAE’s position as a global logistics hub.”
Emirates SkyCargo continues to push the boundaries of logistics innovation. With operations spanning more than 150 destinations and a widebody fleet of over 260 aircraft, the airline remains a global leader in cargo services. Earlier this year, it launched Emirates Courier Express, a door-to-door delivery service integrating the cargo division’s operational capabilities with its passenger network.
LODD Autonomous is reshaping civilian logistics using advanced unmanned aircraft and AI-driven software designed to streamline operations, reduce costs, and support more sustainable delivery models. Supported by the UAE’s Advanced Technology Research Council, Hili embodies the country’s commitment to driving technological development from research to real-world application.
