Mozambique is set to export its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo following the arrival of the British Mentor LNG tanker on August 24.
The bp-operated tanker will arrive at the Coral-Sul floating LNG (FLNG) terminal offshore Mozambique, thereafter transporting LNG to international markets.
Having been at sea for a month, the LNG tanker is officially bound for the Eni-operated Coral-Sul FLNG facility – a $7 billion offshore platform located in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.
In June 2022, the Coral South project safely achieved the introduction of hydrocarbons to the FLNG plant from the Coral South reservoir.
As operator, Eni initially set a target of first LNG export by October 2022, with the arrival of the vessel expected to bring that timeline closer.
Global markets are urgently seeking alternative gas supplies following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
With global LNG prices soaring, Mozambique’s first export is set to bring in significant revenue for the southern African country while introducing new and critical LNG supplies that will help meet global demand.
As per an agreement signed in 2016, bp will purchase all of the Coral-Sul’s LNG production for a 20-year period.
