Metso has expanded its product development and testing capabilities with the commissioning of a new 4 MW extra-large slurry pump test rig at its Test and Training Center in Sala, Sweden.
The rig is among the largest of its kind globally and is now fully operational, with initial tests successfully completed. It can test pumps at flow rates of up to 25,000 cu.m/h, enabling full-scale performance verification under realistic operating conditions for Metso’s slurry pump sizes up to the MD900. The facility is also designed to accommodate larger pumps as the company’s portfolio develops.
The new capability allows Metso to develop complete pump performance curves, optimise pump selection and help customers improve reliability and reduce operational risk.
Evert Lessing, Vice President, Pumps Engineering at Metso, said the new facility enables comprehensive testing of current slurry pump sizes while supporting future product development. He added that, combined with Sala’s broader testing and technology capabilities, it will help customers improve reliability and maximise operational performance.
The Sala site has more than a century of experience in slurry pump innovation and manufacturing and now combines pump, hydrocyclone and valve production with slurry testing and digital condition monitoring. The centre also operates small, medium and large pump test rigs for product development, prototype testing and customer-specific performance validation.
Metso is continuing to invest in the Sala facility, including a new 5,400 sq.m warehouse and delivery centre that will increase the site’s total building area from approximately 21,000 sq.m to more than 26,000 sq.m. The expansion is intended to improve logistics, customer service and workplace safety while strengthening Sala’s role as a global centre for pump technology and manufacturing.
The new test rig complements Metso’s pump testing, engineering and development facilities in Sweden, Peru, Australia and India, supporting product development, performance validation and customer-specific testing across a range of applications and operating conditions.
