WEG provides motors and drives for a significant water transmission project in the Middle East.

WEG, a leading manufacturer of motors, drives, and gearboxes, is poised to play a crucial role in one of the largest water transmission projects in the Middle East.

The company will supply a comprehensive package of motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and transformers to enhance the region’s new water infrastructure, facilitating the transfer of water between two major cities.

This extensive water transmission system poses significant challenges due to extreme temperatures and environmental conditions. The customer required a complete solution that includes transformers, water-cooled VFDs, and motors with power ratings of up to 9.1 MW to drive the pumps in the system.

The MVW01 VFDs, specifically designed for water cooling, feature an electric panel with an innovative thermal dissipation design that enables higher power output. Additionally, the VFDs come equipped with a user-friendly 10-inch touchscreen HMI, making it easier to program and monitor essential operational parameters. By efficiently controlling process speeds, these VFDs help reduce energy consumption, operating and maintenance costs, and the overall total cost of ownership (TCO).

The package also includes phase-shifting transformers that provide complete isolation, minimizing common-mode voltage stress on the motors and reducing harmonics on the power supply. Oil-type transformers were selected to meet the outdoor installation requirements of the project. With a step-lap-type magnetic core design, these transformers optimize noise levels and maintain low exciting currents, while their robust construction can withstand short-circuit stresses. The external coatings protect them against harsh environmental conditions.

Additionally, WEG is supplying water-cooled W60 MV motors designed to deliver outstanding performance in aggressive operating environments, including extreme ambient temperatures. These motors are well-suited for industrial applications such as compressors, pumps, and fans. They are both efficient and modular, allowing for various cooling configurations.

“Water transmission systems are vital components of critical infrastructure, necessitating specialized equipment that is both durable and reliable to ensure effective and safe operation, especially in harsh outdoor conditions,” said Alla Aldrras, HVS development sales manager for HVS Motors & Drives. “Leveraging our global experience in developing solutions for the water industry, we have created a holistic package that meets the customer’s requirements, and our facilities in Brazil enable us to deliver this well within the project timeline.”
